  • Anxiety may prevent learning self-management.

6 of 10 OASIS Items ~> Physiologic & Mental Status ~> Neuro/Emotional/Behavioral Status ~> M0580 ~> Assessment Strategies

Consider the learning needs of an anxious patient. How will you pace the teaching? Will you need to proceed slowly with difficult information? Could anxiety that is present all the time actually prevent the patient from learning self-management? Will you need to teach caregivers, and if so, what and how much, and how long will it take? The OASIS item does not provide a place to record a complete description of the anxiety and factors that contribute to or exacerbate the frequency, or how the patient copes. You'll need to document such information in the clinical record in the appropriate places.
