Recall that response 1—partially impaired vision—suggests "can count fingers at arm's length," but since a testing attitude is not something you want to convey during the assessment, it's far more effective to have him show you if he can distinguish and reach for a needed object that is at arm's length, especially if your assessment to that point suggests impairment. Can he see to reach the phone, eating utensils, medical assistance devices, tissues, gauges on respiratory equipment, and so on?
