A traditional body systems approach to assessment is the strategy most clinicians were taught and many continue to practice in the acute care setting. This kind of assessment focuses on identifying, evaluating, and treating the patient's presenting medical problem. Assessment in the home environment is much broader. A skillful assessment, appropriate to the home setting, focuses on interrelated and often complex aspects of the patient's medical history and current problem(s), existing abilities, personal, social and emotional circumstances, and the living environment.
